Amadei, founder of Engineers Without Borders-USA, who last Thursday captured this year’s Award of Excellence, ENR’s highest honor. Amadei will be featured on the cover of the March 30 issue that will also include a feature story on his accomplishments.

Amadei’s vision for EWB-USA began in 2001 and has since touched the lives of millions of people around the world. 2008 Sand Sculpture Contest a Success

The 2008 Sand Sculpture Contest was a great success. Jim Gusek put together a great photo collection and the Denver Post did a nice writeup of the event. The final vote tallies are here (judges) and here (public/kids). If you have any suggestions or feedback for next year, please let us know. We will certainly try to put more space between the sand piles to give a little more room to move. Congratulations to all trophy winners and teams – everyone was very impressed!

We raised about $7,850 and had about $940 in expenses (mostly permits, insurance, trophies, & park entry fees). So, after the smoke clears, each of our three Denver EWB projects will get about $2,200. You’d be amazed at what that can do in places like Madagascar, Togo, or Ecuador. Thanks again for your support of EWB Denver!

The Chapter has received a request for assistance from an NGO for a structural/geotechnical engineer to assist a team evaluating impacts of a mining project (e.g., vibrations from blasting and truck traffic) on a nearby village. Read more about the opportunity here Call For Volunteer.

This volunteer opportunity is neither a formal Denver Chapter project nor a formal EWB-USA project at this time. Any travel to this site is at the volunteer’s expense and is not sanctioned by the Chapter or EWB-USA.

Does your company want to be a corporate sponsor of EWB? As a corporate sponsor, your company’s tax-deductible donations go to EWB-USA, with up to 60% of your company’s donation to be allocated to the Chapter of your company’s choice. Your company will be recognized at EWB website and sponsored activities. Simply download the form letter that has already been signed by Amy Hui of the Denver Chapter, or personalize a letter with your name and attach the corporate sponsorship levels information sheet. Forward the letter to the corporate donation expert at your company. (These documents are available on the website’s Resources page.) EWB Denver needs someone to help with updates to our website (adding and updating articles, updating photos and documents) a couple of hours per month. No HTML or web design experience is needed. Exposure to Wordpress would be helpful, but is not required. We’ll teach you what you need to know! Contact us for more information.

90th Birthday Gala for Maurice L. (Maury) Albertson

SCE members know that Maury Albertson has been a fixture in the sustainable development community for a long time. His many life-time achievements mark him as a truly remarkable individual.

In recognition of his 90th birthday, Village Earth is honoring Maury at a Gala fundraiser starting at 6 pm August 23 at the Horsetooth Marriott in Fort Collins. Maury founded Village Earth in 1993 to pursue sustainable development in the developing world.

Dr. Bernard Amadei, professor of Engineering at the University of Colorado and founder of Engineers without Borders, will be the Gala speaker. After-dinner dance music will be provided by After the Fire.
