Volunteers Still Needed for CCAF

Hi Denver EWBers! In case you haven’t already heard, the Denver Chapter is preparing for our second year of volunteering at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. This year we will be working in an alcohol booth, and a portion of all of the sales will go to funding for our chapter. It’s a great opportunity to meet some fellow EWBers while networking with the community and talking about the work we do (not to mention, doing the community a great service by providing some frosty drinks on a hopefully beautiful day). No experience is necessary, just come out and have fun!I still need a few volunteers to help out with our booth. Available shifts are:

Friday 7/4
12:30 to 3pm
3 to 8:30pm

Saturday 7/5
9:30am to 3pm

Sunday 7/6
8:30am to 1:30pm - 2 people needed this shift

EWB Denver t-shirts will be available and encouraged for all volunteers to purchase for $10.

Lessons from a Malawi Sanitation Project

Low cost Ecological Sanitation programs in Malawi have led to the building of over 11,000 compostproducing toilets since 2003. While the toilets are affordable and simple to construct, the fact that they convert human waste into valuable odor-free compost, enables cost recovery for households and is a prime driver in popularizing EcoSan designs… Click here for the full report. EWB Cited in Terra Development’s Annual Report

Terra Development recognized our chapter’s support in its 2007 annual report. EWB Denver is working with Terra on an educational project related to preventing and mitigating acid mine drainage in Bolivia. You may wish to read more about Terra and the project, or download the report.

Ecuador Project Videos

A new video of our project work in Ecuador has been released. This is the second in a series produced by Joel Haggar with Water Purification Specialists LLC. You can view both videos here on their website. EWB-Denver has been involved with improving water delivery in Malingua Pamba, Ecuador, since August of 2006.

2008 Sand Sculpture Contest

The Sand Sculpture Contest is the single largest fundraising activity for EWB-Denver. This year it is planned for Saturday, August 9 at Bear Creek State Park outside of Morrison, Colorado. The more teams we get to participate, the more money we raise ($500/team for corporate, $150/team for non-profit). See the event page for more information and a copy of the registration form.

We are asking everyone to contact your family members and friends who work for organizations (not necessarily engineering companies)that might be interested in participating. Please take a moment to think about who you could solicit and let Jim Gusek (jgusek@golder.com) or Scott Allen (sallen@golder.com) know who you have contacted. Your help on this would be greatly appreciated as personal relationships can be very effective fundraising mechanisms.

Partnering Opportunity with Women’s/Family Outreach Center

Dear Fellow Denver EWBers, the Chapter has received an urgent request for partnering assistance from Ann Carter, Director of Development for The Women’s Crisis & Family Outreach Center in Castle Rock, Colorado.

TWCFOC is hoping to build a new and larger women’s shelter within the next 12-18 months. They have raised almost one-third of the money needed for construction but the main issue is one of land and road development as well as the building of infrastructure on a parcel of land in Castle Rock.

Douglas County is helping them obtain title on one acre of land in a 5-acre parcel and “push through” the planning and zoning requirements as quickly and quietly as possible; the Corps of Engineers has verbally agreed to assist them in road construction. Despite this assistance, they are likely to face other very significant development costs. In particular, they are seeking assistance to design the subdivision (water & sewer, utilities, drainage, storm water management, etc.?).

Their initial estimate for this phase of the project was about $35,000; at an average assumed billing rate of $100 per hour, this is about 350 hours of effort.

Would members of the Denver Chapter willing to assist in a portion of this project? We’ve checked with EWB-USA and worthy local projects of this type are fully endorsed… we are apparently not confined by ANY borders, eh?
