Does your company want to be a corporate sponsor of EWB? As a corporate sponsor, your company’s tax-deductible donations go to EWB-USA, with up to 60% of your company’s donation to be allocated to the Chapter of your company’s choice. Your company will be recognized at EWB website and sponsored activities. Simply download the form letter that has already been signed by Amy Hui of the Denver Chapter, or personalize a letter with your name and attach the corporate sponsorship levels information sheet. Forward the letter to the corporate donation expert at your company. (These documents are available on the website’s Resources page.) Frances Fierst has kindly transported our chapter patches from half way ’round the world! Show your EWB pride with a hand-embroidered patch from Nepal. Support the Denver professional chapter, and support local Napli artisans too. These patches are completely and individually hand-sewn, and are available for $5 each. We don’t have many, so get yours soon! We will have them at the chapter meetings. If you can’t make a meeting, check with your nearest chapter member, or contact us via the website and we’ll make sure you get one.

KBCO Loves EWB

Here’s an EWB-centric KBCO Select-A-Set, created and submitted by our very own Zeke Houk, and played this past weekend. Nice work, Zeke!

The Denver Chapter of ‘Engineers Without Borders’ has projects in Africa and South America. In these developing places our new-found friends need clean water most of all. Fortunately our organization has men and women who do that kind of work every day.

The Engineers would like to hear:
Jackson Browne’s Lives in the Balance,
Johnny Clegg’s Scatterlings of Africa,
Take Me To the River by Talking Heads, and
With a Little Help From My Friends by The Beatles.

We have people working in Togo now, and another team on its way to Ecuador in April. After all, friends don’t let friends drink dirty water.

“Engineers Without Borders – USA (EWB-USA) is a non-profit humanitarian organization established to partner with developing communities worldwide in order to improve their inhabitant ’s quality of life. The EWB-USA Denver Chapter was founded in 2006 by a group of professionals dedicated to utilizing their skills to help these communities. Membership is open to engineers and non-engineers alike, and all skills are valued, from health care and construction to education and language…”

Kevin Greer wrote this article about our chapter and activities for a publication called “Rumbles” by the Rocky Mountain Water Environment Federation and Rocky Mountain Section of the American Waterworks Association. Download the full article here.

Video of Project Work in Ecuador

Joel Haggar with Water Purification Specialists LLC created a wonderful, inspirational video of our work in Ecuador. You can view it on here on their website. EWB-Denver has been involved with improving water delivery in Malingua Pamba, Ecuador, since August of 2006. Malingua Pamba is a mountain village perched high on the Andes at 10,000 feet elevation. This video contains 15 minutes of beautiful footage and heartwarming interviews. Please take a moment to see how these dedicated Denver-area engineers are working to make a difference in the world!

Household Water Treatment and Storage (HWTS) Alternatives

This is a report commissioned by the Wilson Center related to Household Water Treatment and Storage.

From the report: “The United Nations’ International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade (1981-1990) failed to achieve its goal of universal access to safe drinking water and sanitation by 1990 (World Health Organization [WHO], 2003). Even though service levels rose by more than 10 percent during the decade, 1.1 billion people still lacked access to improved water supplies, and 2.4 billion people were without adequate sanitation, in 1990 (WHO/UNICEF, 2000). Reasons cited for the decade’s failure include population growth, funding limitations, inadequate operation and maintenance, and continuation of a business as usual approach, drawing on traditional resources, policies, and technologies…”

Monthly Meeting Content

Monthly meetings typically include brief updates of our three ongoing projects in Ecuador, Togo, and Bolivia. We also discuss fundraising efforts and similar topics. We are considering dedicating a portion of the meetings to “hands-on” demonstrations or mini-classes on things like “Plumbing-101″ or other simple technologies that might find application in our projects. What would you as members or engineers like to see in these presentations? Do you have a special talent or technological knowledge that you could share with the chapter?
