The Denver Professionals Chapter of Engineers without Borders (EWB-Denver) held its first annual Sand Sculpture Contest on Saturday, August 25th, 2007. The sand sculpting event was at Lakewood’s Belmar Park in conjunction with Lakewood on Parade. The contest was held as fundraiser to support sustainable water projects in Malingua Pamba, Ecuador and Agou Avedje, Togo. |
| Nine teams entered the event and each team spent the morning building their sand sculpture. Teams showed great creativity and artistic skill in constructing their sculptures. See this writeup on YourHub (Rocky Mountain News) for more contest photos. Team entries included sculptures of “The Littlest Engineer” Gnome, a Moai Easter Island Statue, Roman Aqueducts, a Dragon guarding a castle, and a puzzle medley. Judging of the sculptures was conducted by Lakewood City Councilman Bob Murphy, EWB-USA Executive Director Cathy Leslie, and Adam Lerner with the Lab at Belmar. |

First prize in the Open Sculpture competition went to Golder Associates’ Engineer Gnome. Camp Dresser and McKee (CDM) won the Best Engineered Sculptured award for a 3-D replication of their corporate logo in a sand castle format (with a moat, too). CDM also won the People’s Choice Award, which raised over $500 by allowing event goers to vote with their wallet. The event netted over $5,500 and all proceeds will be evenly divided between the Ecuador and Togo water projects. |
| The members of EWB-Denver offer our heart-felt thanks to all those who participated, and to our corporate and in-kind sponsors who made this event possible. The first annual sand sculpting contest was clearly a success and we look forward to next year’s contest. |
